The Allure Trilogy: Part one

Hey!

Recently, I went to Allure Magazine with Liana Schaffner (Beauty Department). Not only did she let us interview her, tour the magazine, and ‘shop’ in the beauty closet, but she gave us her tickets to a Gemma Kahng presentation (For those of you who don’t know, is an exclusive preview of a designers new collections). The next few days will be devoted to all of our adventures. Read on for part one: Discussing the must have products, and getting the secrets on the best brands (hint: it’s something you could easilly get at CVS) with Liana Schaffner herself!

After we toured the stylish halls filled with stylish girls typing on mac laptops and buzzing around, we sat down with Liana. Wearing a black leather motorcycle jacket, burgundy lace top, and leggings tucked into booties, she proved she looks just as nice as she is.

2chicgurls: If you were stranded on a desert island and you could only five products, which ones would you choose?

Liana Schaffner: Oh my gosh, only five? Hmm… I’d take drugstore mascara (some of the best are so sophisticated these days) and tinted moisturizer. I don’t use foundation a lot because it gets cakey and after all, if you’re gonna be on an island, you don’t want your makeup to melt easily. I’d also take cream blush, because you can also use it on your lips (her favorite is Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge). I’d definitely take a brow pencil, ’cause when your brows look good, the rest of your face does too, and then I’d bring a brow pencil to blend it all in.

2CG: What is your all time favorite makeup and brand?

LS: All brands are so good, and I love blush and mascara, but I’d have to say lipstick, and Chantecaille makes this lipstick called Cassiopeia. It’s just like this perfect coral, bright, beautiful pink. If you wear it, your just…set!

Chantecaille Sheer Lipstick in Cassiopeia

Chantecaille Sheer Lipstick in Cassiopeia

2CG: How would you describe working at Allure?

LS:
Theres definitely a glamour aspect of working in a beauty magazine, and its very exciting, but it’s hard work. You don’t just show up and play with products. There’s a lot of writing and editing. With beauty especially, you have to talk to many chemists, dermatologists, research and development people, because beauty is like science. Even the simplest, whitest cream has science behind it. You have to be sure the products you recommend are good.

2CG: Whats your favorite part?

LS: I’m a writer, so it’s exciting that I get to write so much (right now, we’re working on the May Issue!) But it’s also pretty exciting to know the best makeup and trends. I get to be really creative, because you can’t recycle the same information over and over.

2CG: We feel your pain! Anyway, final question. What advice would you want to give to people who want a career in beauty and/or fashion?

LS: Well, what you guys are doing is great, having a blog is an awesome way to start your own profession. Keep on top of things and apply for internships! Learn anything from the ground up!

Thank you so much, Liana! Also, follow to stay posted for our huge haul, reviews included!

XOXO,

MAKEUP: It’s a little hard to draw the line between cute and tacky. Luckily, Candace Swanepoel seems to know what shes doing (pictures from Polyvore from here down)

Option One: Sweet-

Candace

Flushed cheeks, glowing skin, and nude lips? Perfect.

Get the look: wash your face well and apply any morning routine product (face wash, etc.) Rub in your moisturizer until it’s set in your skin. Apply vanilla eye shadow to your lid, then pale pink to your crease.(optional) Blend well. Get a red lip gloss, and put it on your index finger. On your middle finger, take a small scoop of your favorite moisturizer (a little more than usual), and mix about half on to the lipgloss, then apply the gloss-moisturizer on your cheeks. Rub the non-red moisturizer on the rest of your skin (This trick was learned in the Bobbi Brown book) Though it sounds like circus makeup, it gives you a pretty pale pink flush. Seal the look with pale gloss…on your lips.

Option Two: Sassy-

Candace

Big eyes with a wing, white eyeliner and red lipstick screams: Hello, heartbreaker!

Get the look: Start the look off like in option one. Do your morning face routine, wash, face scrub, whatever you do. Then moisturize. Take your favorite black wet-eyeliner and do a small wing (If your as hopeless at that as I am, then only do the line, not the wing.) If you want to, add a pale gray color on your lower line. Then, (back to mandatory :) ) apply pale white (NOT SPARKLY!) eye shadow or eyeliner to the corener of your eye, and a little bit on your lower lash line. Put foundation on your lips, then red lip liner. With a lip brush, apply a red lipstick. Swipe on some red gloss, and you’ll be glowing!

Hair: It’s impossible to have soft, manageable, pretty hair last minute, right? WRONG.

Sweet Inspiration: Samantha Barks

Brush through your hair, and get out all the knots possible. If your hair is looking hermione-ish, put in a little leave in conditioner and frizz cream (make sure they say for dry hair) Then, gather the front of either side of your hair, one with more strands than the other, pin them loosely back. If you need it and have time, curl the bottom of your hair for loose easy ringlets.

Samantha Barks

Sassy Inspiration: Fergie

Brush your hair completely through until it shines (For an extra glossy look, add shine serum.) If you have curly hair, straighten it. It you have short hair or want to got the extra mile, grab your extensions. Gather up your hair except for a small portion near the front and put it into the highest ponytail you can and secure it, preferably with a rubber band close to your hair colors. Wrap the section around your rubber band and secure it with a few bobby pins. To reduce all flyaways, put hairspray on a soft bristled brush (if you don’t have any, a toothbrush will do) Brush through your hair, and voila! Perfect pony.

Ponytail with hair wrapped around to tie it up.Fergies simple ponytail hairstyle hair-and-beauty

Presents:

For girls- Take all of your candy stash and divide it, a pile for each friend. Throw in a little chocolate square (wrapped, of course) or a pack of gum. Place in a pretty pink bag with tissue paper and tie the whole thing with some girly curled ribbons.

For guys- Homemade food is definitely the key. Make chocolate chip cookies and a sweet note, and you’ll have a not-so-secret admirer.

Hope your valentines day is romantic, fun, and easy!

XOXO,

mermaid

FOUR MINI REVIEWS: Revlon products

Hey! I recently bought four Revlon products: Colorburst Lip Gloss, Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain, Colorstay Longwear Enamel, and Revlon Colorstay 16 hour eye shadow. They’re all super awesome, so I decided to write a review on them. (Click the picture to buy them)

1. Colorburst Lip Gloss in Sunset Peach

I got this gorgeous lip gloss as a present from my sister and I LOVE it! It looks amazing with olive skin and totally makes lips look super full. The foam brush spreads gloss easily and isn’t too gloppy or sticky. All in all, I would reccomend this yummy smelling, peach lip gloss to anyone and everyone.

PRICE: $7.50

RATING: ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ (10/10)

2. Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain

I got the next three from a Secret santa. The first is a SUPER BRIGHT balm stain. It’s really pretty, and stays on forever. Like I said before, it’s really bright, very barbie-ish. It’s fun for a night out and looks cute on. The only (slight) problem is its very delicate. I love it and I’m very glad i got it :)

Revlon Just Bitten Kissable™ Balm Stain

Price: $9

Rating: ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤- (9/10)

3. Colorstay Longwear Enamel in Fall Mood

My second gift from my Secret Santa was this polish. It might be one of my favorites. It’s sparkly but covers your nail, and complements your skin to make it look tan. Its’s a really good brush but a teensy bit gloppy, but dries smooth.

Revlon ColorStay Longwear Nail Enamel - Fall Mood

Price: $8

RATING: ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ (10/10)

4. Revlon Colorstay 16 hour eye shadow in Inspired

This was my final gift from my Secret Santa. It’s nice quality and is easily applied. I haven’t gotten to use this one as much, but I have to admit that this is my least favorite. It’ s a little bright, and it doesn’t look very good (at least on me) when I follow the look on the back. However, when the I use just one color in a look, it looks pretty!

Revlon® ColorStay™ 16 Hour Eye Shadow

Price: $5.62

RATING: ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ (8/10)

Review: Revlon Moondrops Lipstick in Orange Flip

Hey!

Mermaid here, reviewing Revlon Moondrops Lipstick in Orange Flip. When I was having a mini photo shoot with friends, my outfit was very classic, a white dress and a topknot with a denim ribbon. My friend suggested that I’d borrow her lipstick for a dash of extra color. After applying it, then checking out how it looked, I had two thoughts:

 1. WOW!
 2. Where can I get this?

Eventually, I got it, and I am so excited. The bright, firetruck red/orange, smooth, lipstick is amazing! It stays on for a really long time, and the color is crazy cool. It could be worn with anything, from a fancy dress to a casual outfit that needs some flair.

Price: On the more expensive side- $9.00
Rating: ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ (10/10)

Mermaids Beach Essentials

Hey!

I just got back from the Hamptons. After spending a while tanning, playing in the sand, and swimming in the ocean, I think I might have the beach look down pat, and so do celebrities. Do you? If not, read on for head to toe essentials.

Hair: Think beachy waves are the only style acceptable? You’re wrong. Now, Katniss side-plaits, bitty buns, high ponys, and my personal favorite, tiny little braids randomly woven in are making an entrance.

Blake Lively

To get this: Put texturing spray in dry or wet hair. Then, take five small pieces (at minimum) and braid, then secure them. Finish the look of with hair mousse to help your curls.

Face/makeup: At the seashore, a minimal look is key, so all you need to shine (no pun intended) is nude gloss and a little glittery blush/shadow.

Michelle Trachtenberg

To get this: Use a lip and cheek stain to give yourself a little color. Than, mix a few neutral eye shadows. Add a little metallic sparkle, some mascara and powder, and voila! Hello, gorgeous!

Neck{lace}: When wearing a neutral suit, a big and bright necklace can complete your look. But be careful! If any of the outfit, cover-up included, is colorful or geo printed, then a big accessory can be overkill.

Solange Knowles

Silver Multirow Bead Collar Necklace

Get the look with this silver multi-row bead collar necklace

Outfit: A cover-up is obviously necessary, but who says dresses are the only option? Light cardigans and button-down, over any bathing suit, are just as cute.

Kate Moss

Bdg Printed Flannel Button-Down ShirtVix front

-Get the look: Whether tied up or left down, buttoned or not, this shirt over a classic white bikini is sure to put all eyes on you.

Nails: Who says your outfit is the only thing is the only thing that can stand out? With matching nails in a cool print, your hands may just steal the show.

Zooey Deschanel

Get the look: Paint nails all white (or any color) , then let dry. Use a nail pen to color the tips black (or, again, any color). Draw 3 small dots down from the center of your nail, and a small bow-tie under the last dot. Let dry, then cover your nails with a top coat.

Shoes: Anything waterproof will work. Flipflops and gladiators are especially cute. Even though I love them, please leave your heels at home!

Can’t go wrong with Haviannas!

Let me know what your beach brings are below in the comments!

 Bronzing Powder

The M.A.C. Bronzing Powder is perfect at giving you a gorgeous glow!

For the smoky look:

L’Oreal One Sweep Eye Shadow

It’s been popping up everywhere, and lets just say, it’s so worth the fuss. Easy and simple? Yes please.

Dior Addict Lip Balm

Dior - Dior Addict Lip Balm

When wearing a smoky eye, you don’t want the lips to be too bright, so a coral smooth balm is your fix!

Nyx Glitter Pallet Ice Queen

With a smoky look, a little bit of sparkle is key. This affordable ($5.49!) pallette is my hero!

For a bold look:

SEPHORA COLLECTION – Colorful Duo Eyeshadow

SEPHORA COLLECTION - Colorful Duo Eyeshadow

Blue brings out every eye, and this duo is a perfect example. The colorful pair tastefully (no tacky looks here!) makes your eyes practically scream “notice me!”

Lip Smacker® Cotton Candy

If anyone wears bright lips and eyes, they’re doomed. Thats where yummy-tasting, clear balm comes in, and believe me, you’ll be applying it like there’s no tomorrow!

Ôscillation Intensity

The brush? Amazing! The product? Better than amazing! This guarentees to give you lonnnngg luscious lashes.

Mermaids Monday Makeup {Splurges}

Hey!

So alot of the time we buy that amazing makeup, but the problem is….it doesn’t work. And that is really annoying. I mean, who likes buying a $20 lip stain that, well, doesn’t stain? No one. So… here I am, saving you with splurges that give you results that WORK:

Baby Lips SPF 20 lip moisturizing balm: Maybelline says that it will give you “visibly renewed lips in 4 weeks.” At first, I doubted it, but now it’s a different story. Trust me, this will instantly make your lips softer, and depending on the color, brighter!

BADgal Lash Mascara: When I got the mascara, it was because it was on sale. Now, I count on it to make my lashes “thick, beautiful and bodacious”.

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil: This liner is smooth, soft, and everything you could want in an eyeliner. My sister, a.k.a my makeup guru, swears by it.

NYC New York Color Smooch Proof 16HR Lip Stain: I have this lip stain in Champagne Stain, and it totally makes my lips very pink for verrryyy long. J’adore!

What are your make-up products that changed your life? The ones that sound “fake” but aren’t? Comment below, or email me at mermmaids2chic@gmail.com (for more things to email me, check out http://2chicgurls.com/2012/04/22/contest/

Mermaids Mondays…face care?

Hey!

Ok, makeup is amazing. If any human girl doesn’t agree, then I personally think you are crazy. But anyway, there is a downside to makeup. The after results. Now, I’m not talking about the amazing Chap Stick that completely plumps and softens those lips. Or the lotion that makes your skin sooo soft! I’m talking about the “Oh, whatever, I don’t need to take this makeup off” problem. You know-the one where you don’t remember/care enough to take off that makeup, and you wake up with skin that is anything but attractive. When that happens- you need fixes, fast. So, here are some geniuses ones that {actually} work:

Problem: Zits all over/the feeling that you always have right before you get them

Solution: Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Stress Control… this exfoliates your skin, leaving it soft, smooth, and acne-free!

Problem: Blemishes

Solution: Even Better Skin Tone Correcting Moisturizer SPF 20…This is an amazing, face lotion that completely corrects your skin tone, and everything on your skin! As a bonus, it has built in SPF, so you can also have your skin protected from the sun!

Problem: Redness

Solution: Intral Redness Relief Soothing Serum…this Serum is “A nourishing serum to instantly calm irritated skin and reduce redness.” It leaves your “complexion feeling soft and hydrated.”

Problem: Dryness

Solution: Estée Lauder Vérité Moisture Relief Crème…this crème helps makes your face feel smooth. It is “Entirely free of common irritants, including emulsifiers, alcohol and fragrance.” Score.

Don’t want any of this stuff on your face? Get a GOOD makeup remover. (I like nu-pore Make-Up Remover Wipes: http://www.dollardays.com/i822957-wholesale-nu-pore-make-up-removing-tissues-ponds-.html)

Heart,

Mermaids Mondays Nails

Hey girls!

Sure, we all know the classic nails: 1 color, pretty texture, a little sparkle, and a base code. Perfect nails! Or not…

Nail styles have been changing-alot. If you didn’t realize that, just look around (we’re thinking Sally Hansen Salon Effects Real Nail Polish Strips and Effie Trinket from the Hunger Games….pictured below)

But, if you don’t want to take the time to file on nail strips or have a costume designer glue on nails, heres some simple ways to update mani/pedis:

 1. French manicures-with glitter: take your average french nail color (i like N.Y.Cs Love Letters) and add a subtle shine of sparkles. The white tip is optional.
 2. Colorblock nails: Swipe on a coat of any color, let it dry. Then, paint half (of the top or side) or a stripe of your nail of a different color, and there you go!
 3. Lace nails: Fabfatale.com gives awesome advice on how to do these, but heres a quick summary- paint your nails a color that will match the lace, let it dry, (use base coat too) cut lace to approximate size of nails, lay it on wax paper and add NON PERMANENT glue, lay it on nails, and voila! Lacey nails. To see the full instruction check out this linkhttp://www.stumbleupon.com/su/21MvaD/www.thelooksforless.com/2010/09/28/manicure-mondays-lace-manicure-diy/
 4. Polka dot nails: They’re not really an update, but these are so cute! Take a base coat (I like OPI’s Go on green! or Dior’s Riviera.) and let dry. Then, use a nail pen (Sally Hansens Nail Pen is key- try white or black) and draw dots on it. Then, after it dries, add a clear protective coat. It’s THAT easy.
 5. Coats of your favorite nail glitter: The easiest-and last nail update. Instead of using glitter on nail designs (see 1.) just put on a few coats of of your favorite glittery color. (I recommend the new Essie luxeeffects collection)
That’s all for now! Comment on your own nail updates below.

Heart,

Commenters Mondays obsessions

Hey!

Sorry i didn’t write one last Monday, but here I am now for comment-ers mondays makeup obsession! When i got a comment from JuJu telling me: “omg. im in luuuv with Kat von D True romance eyeshadow palette. if ur obsessed with random shades of eye shadow, check out this.” So, i ‘checked it out’ and the verdict is….ITS AMAZING!

I love the nude and green tones, the sleek box, and pretty much everything else! For the people who, well, aren’t checking out Sephora.com daily here’s what it looks like:

True Romance Eyeshadow Palette - Ludwig

What it does: A smoky eye adds an instant air of mystery—create your own with the True Romance Eyeshadow Palette. Designed by reality television star Kat Von D especially for Sephora, this artistic spectrum of shades brings an edgy-glam creativity to your makeup. The sleek black eyeshadow palette is stenciled with silver roses and arrives packaged in a silk-screened black and silver box that is itself a work of art—and inspired by Kat’s favorite tattoo.”

Who ever writes Sephora descriptions describes it perfectly, but heres a few ideas on how to wear it…

 • Smoky eyes: With a touch of green eyeliner over a few different shades ( I’d choose “Orbi- a green gold shimmer”, “Dimebag-a metallic lime green” and smoothed together with “Tequilla- a metalic cornsilk shimmer” and/or “Downtown metallic light copper shimmer”) this would look so cute! Depending on just how green you go, you could wear it from a hang-out to a fancy dinner. Your choice!
 • Glamorous and low-key: Glamorous AND low key? Yup, i know it sounds crazy, but a few shades of nude blended with brown mascara is totally gorge!
 • Costume: Got that costume party coming up? Make your unique look with the different shades and you’ll be the belle of the ball, well, party…
Got a look I forgot? Do you have the product, and like it? Email me at Mermaids2chic@gmail.com with the subject: Mermaids makeup and i’ll feature the look/comment right here! Or, send me your favorite makeup to the same email and you’ll get featured in a blog post!

Heart,
